Today’s blog is a rant. Be warned.
I’m frightened of the Dentist. I’ve always been frightened.
Two weeks ago I had a lump come up on my gum where I have a bad tooth. I waited to see if it would go down on it’s own.I decided last Monday I would call to schedule an appointment . Like many other friends I know I don’t have insurance. My only chance to get dental work done is at a low income clinic. It’s not where I want to be at but in this economy I appreciate the availability. I called to schedule an appointment when they opened (8:00AM). I got a voicemail so I left a message with all my information. A couple hours later I thought it was weird I haven’t received a call back. I asked the receptionist if it’s normal to not have anyone call back. She informed me there was only 1 worker for all five of their clinics and I would get a call back shortly. It was near the end of business when I decided to call back. I asked “Does it normally take this long to be scheduled for an appointment?” This was her response:
“She’s only ONE PERSON handling HUNDREDS of calls. You need to wait.”
I replied “Well..what about this abscessed tooth? What do I need to do for it until then?”
She said “Wait your turn. Don’t call back.”
I waited. Tuesday passed. Wednesday passed. I had a doctor’s appointment for my shoulder on Wednesday. When I was checking out from my appointment I spoke to the scheduler. She said she knew the person who schedules dental appointments. She took down my information to give to schedule. I let out a sigh of relief.
I heard nothing on Thursday, Friday, Saturday, or Sunday. I left another voicemail on Friday with the same woman who was suppose to call me on Monday that I still haven’t heard anything. I just wanted a call back with an appointment. My abscess has drained puss two times at this point. I’ve been gargling mouth wash, keeping the area clean, and swishing hydrogen peroxide. I have no clue what I’m suppose to do at this point. My husband decides to intervene and call today. He got a hold of a supervisor and explained the situation. The supervisor wanted to talk to me. She said she’d take my information down and give it to the scheduler. Here’s how the conversation went:
“I appreciate you taking the information back to the scheduler but that’s already been done and I STILL haven’t received a call back.”
The next thing she said blew my mind.
“If you want you can wait at our clinic for a cancellation. We’re there from 8:00AM until 11:30AM and open back up at 1:30PM. We close at 7:00PM. ”
Really? REALLY? I have a four month old child with no friends or family who can watch him while I sit and wait for a POSSIBLE appointment. The supervisor reassured me I would get a call back as soon as possible.
Guess who didn’t call?
I’m furious. All I want is a call to get an appointment for antibiotics and set up a day for this tooth to be removed. Is it that hard to do? I decided to take things in my own hands. I got a hold of the Director of Operations. I told her the entire situation. She was the first person to seem sympathetic about what has happened. She promised me she would call me back first thing in the morning. She agreed it was not acceptable and didn’t understand why I didn’t get a call back – especially since I have an abscess.
For those of you who don’t know: If the infection spreads it can kill you. Isn’t that lovely?
I get to continue to play the waiting game. I’m praying tomorrow I might get an appointment. Until then I guess I continue to do what I’m doing and pray the infection doesn’t spread. It has to be my luck the one time I can get the courage to go to the dentist I can’t get scheduled.
I’ll let you know what happens tomorrow.
