Warning: This casserole is not for the faint of heart. In a perfect world the MANnerole would be Chuck Norris approved but it’s not: it’s MAN approved.
When you’re low on groceries it can be hard to come up with something the man in your family might eat. I have a recipe that’s easy, cheap, and tasty enough for a man. You see men these days need a casserole fit for a man. That is why I have come up with a MANnerole.
Here’s what you’ll need:
1lb ground round
1 cup onion
1 large can Cream of Mushroom Soup (Fat Free)
2 medium potatoes
1 cup black beans *optional*
1 & 1/2 cups shredded cheese
Preheat your oven to 350 degrees. Preheat a pan to medium – medium high. In the pan crumble the ground round, add the diced onion, and then season with salt, pepper, & garlic powder. Using regular garlic is just fine too! Cook until the ground round is browned. I prefer ground round over ground beef because it’s much leaner but you can use ground beef if you’d like. You might even want to try Boston burger.
While the ground round is browning you’ll want to start cutting/shredding/dicing the potato. I prefer shredding since it’s easier on my hands. I could have thinly sliced the potatoes but the casserole would be more like scalloped potatoes. Shredded potatoes give that casserole type consistency I like.
The inspiration for the MANnerole is my husband. He is a meat and potatoes type of guy. That’s all he wants to eat. It scares me how much he likes meat and potatoes. So babe this recipe is for you!
After shredding the potatoes you’ll get what resembles raw hash browns.
In a casserole dish place the shredded potatoes on the bottom of the dish. It’s one potato per layer. Congratulations you’re on the way to MANnerole destiny.
I haven’t forgotten about the ground round. Once the ground round is browned you can take it off its heat. Your meat is ready to be used.
Split the ground round mixture into half. Layer on top of the potato layer the ground round mixture. I took some liberty (well in all honestly I had black beans with my dinner tonight) with my original recipe and added some black beans. Hurray.
Here’s where the magic happens. Your next layer is Cream of Mushroom soup. Do NOT USE ANY WATER. Use half of the can on the first two layers.
Start again with another potato layer, then ground round mixture, add black beans, and top with the remaining amount of the Cream of Mushroom soup.
What is a casserole without cheese? Use whatever cheese you please. Did I just rhyme? I used a mozzarella/cheddar blend.
Put your MANnerole in the preheated 350 degree oven for about 45 minutes. Behold the greatness:
Wait until the MANnerole is cooled off before serving. Although your husband may just ask for a spoon to go into the casserole dish.
