Chocolate Chip Brownie Fake Out

Chocolate chip cookies and brownies are two of my favorite indulgences. What can be any better than a chocolate chip cookie or a brownie?  Then one day I had the brillant idea of combining the two together. I only had one problem: I haven’t been able to go to the store & purchase brownie mix. All I had on hand was a box of Devil’s Food cake. I started brainstorming ideas of what I could I do with the Devil’s Food cake & chocolate chip cookies. Then I realized  it might be possible to make brownies out of cake mix. I’ve seen recipes of cookies made out of cake mix so why not brownies?  Well I’m here to tell you it can be done! The result is actually quite delicious. Are you ready for a fake out? Keep reading.

Inspiration for the Recipe:  Betty Crocker & Food.Com

The first thing you need is cookie dough and chocolate cake mix. I had Ghirardelli Tripe Chocolate Cookie Mix and Pillsbury Moist Supreme Devil’s Food Cake in my pantry. If you want you can use brownie mix but that kind of defeats the purpose of a fake out. You use can whatever cookie dough that tickles your fancy.

Step 0

If you are a strict recipe follower you might not like what I’m going to say next: Do not follow the recipe on the back of the box. I repeat: Do NOT follow the recipe on the back of the mix. We want our cake mix dense like a brownie.

Here’s what you need for the cake mix:
1/4 cup water
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1/4 cup light brown sugar
2 large eggs
1 stick of butter (set at room temperature)

Step 1

We don’t need to make any modification to the cookie dough. My particular mix of cookie dough only requires a stick of butter (set at room temperature) and 1 egg.

Step 2

In a large bowl combine the cake mix with 1/4 cup brown sugar, 2 eggs, 1 teaspoon vanilla extract, 1/4 cup water, and 1 stick of butter.

Step 3

Mix it together. I used a hand mixer on low for 2 minutes.  Step 4

If you don’t have a mixer you can mix by hand. Because we followed a different recipe for the cake batter it’s going to be very thick. After cake batter is blended, set aside.

Step 5

In another bowl start your cookie dough mix.

Step 6

Add in 1 egg, and a stick of butter. You can mix your cookie dough with a mixer, but I decided to mix my cookie dough by hand to keep things interesting.

Step 7

Almost there…

Step 8

Voila!

Step 9

Step the cookie dough aside. Preheat your oven to 350 degrees. In a 9 x 13 glass pan grease with cooking spray or your preferred greasing method.  Pour your “brownie” batter into the pan.

Step 10

Spread the “brownie” batter evenly in the pan.

Step 11

Take spoonfuls of your cookie dough mix and drop into the batter.

Step 12

Once you have all of your cookie dropped on top of the “brownie” batter press it in. I found it easier to press the cookie dough with my fingers.  Have kids who like helping in the kitchen? Let them press the cookie dough into the batter.

Step 13

It’s baking time! Cook in the oven 40 to 45 minutes. Check with a toothpick to make sure the batter is cooked. When you should have the following result: Step 14

Hello, Gorgeous.

Let your chocolate chip brownie fake out goodness cool off. Want kick your chocolate chip brownie fake out up a notch? Frost them with chocolate frosting or chocolate ganache. If you decide not to frost the chocolate chip brownie fake out, cut and & serve when they’re cool.

Step 16

You have to see texture of this chocolate chip brownie fake out. It looks and feels exactly like a brownie minus the flaking and a little bit of gooey-ness. Doesn’t it look decadent?  My husband didn’t believe me when I told him I used Devil’s Food cake!

Step 15

The sky is the limit with what you do with your chocolate chip brownie fake out. Enjoy them alone or with ice cream. Be warned: These are deliciously addicting.  I had to have my husband hide them from me so I wouldn’t keep eating them.

I had fun making chocolate chip brownie fake outs. With a little inspiration & creativity you can create unique desserts for your family. I hope I inspired you to think outside your box.
