Did you know August is Water Quality Month? Water Quality can be improved with a little bit of water conservation. A lot of people take clean water for granted, but is the tap water you’re drinking really clean?
I’m sure everyone at least has gotten water out of the sink and it has been less than pleasant. Unfiltered tap water scares me because of the risk of harmful contaminants. I refuse to make my son’s formula with tap water. I purchase bottled water or gallons of water to use for my son’s formula, in recipes which call for water, providing water to my cats, and for using in beverages. Not only is purchasing bottle watered an inconvenience, it’s also expensive. You may have heard of water filtration systems. Water Filtration Systems are pretty nifty. Most Water Filtration Systems are either gadgets you put on your faucet or are in the style of a pitcher with a built in filter.
I got so sick of buying water for my son I decided I was going to buy a water filter. My family is on a tight budget and the constant purchasing of water is taking a huge toll on our budget. In a weird twist of fate I was contacted by MAVEA who wanted me to try their MAVEA pitcher the day I was about to purchase a water filtration system. But what exactly is MAVEA anyway?
About MAVEA:
MAVEA pitchers are different from other filtration systems because they utilize leading technology and design to create a fresh difference one can taste, see and smell. MAVEA’s activated carbon filter clears water of impurities such as copper, lime scale, mercury and cadmium. The ion exchange resin beads within the filter reduce atrazine, benzene, simazine, chlorine, tetrachloroethylene and carbon particles. The unique design even eliminates odor. No need to worry about changing the filter either, because the MAVEA Smart Meter clearly displays the remaining lifespan of the filter.
MAVEA water pitchers prevent bacteria growth and improve the duration of the filter. You can also go green with MAVEA’s 100% recyclable filters! Lastly, softer water means less wear-and-tear on appliances.
All MAVEA pitchers are 100% BPA Free. MAVEA will also provide a paid shipping label to recycle their filters. In the future you’ll be able to take your filters to participating stores.
I received the Elemaris XL in a lovely shade of purple. MAVEA made using the Elemaris XL ridiculously easy. You don’t need to soak your filter before using it. All I did was follow the instructions, placed the filter in, and we were ready to go. After I poured tap water through the pour-in lid, it only took a couple minutes before I had filtered water. Being a mom I’ve learned to appreciate convenience whenever I can find it and MAVEA’s Elemaris XL gives me the convenience I need in my life.
Part of MAVEA’s innovative technology is their digital meter. This meter tells you exactly when you need to change your filter. It also measures your water’s hardness & volume. I’ve used a water filtration pitcher before and I always had to guess when it was time for a new filter.
As you can see in the above picture, the meter is counting down to how much life is left in the cartridge. When it’s time for a new filter there will be a flashing display informing me when.
I have been using the MAVEA Elemaris XL for a couple weeks to see if prolonged usage effects the taste and smell of the filtered water. I have not noticed any negative changes. Now, the water we get from the faucet is.. well.. I’m going to be blunt: It’s nasty. The taste & smell of chemicals, and the cloudy look our tap water normally gives off disappears in my filtered water. The MAVEA Elemaris XL has been a godsend to me. I haven’t had to purchase bottled water since I’ve been using this pitcher. The cost of the pitcher has already been paid for just in the weeks I’ve been using it. Now that’s what I call savings.
When it’s time to purchase more another filter I will be doing so. Between the MAVEA’s unique design, innovative technology, and the convenience it provides I would have to be silly not to continue using MAVEA. MAVEA is a smart buy and inexpensive.
The MAVEA Elemaris XL is available in the United States and Canada. You can either purchase the pitcher in stores or you can purchase online.
Since we’re celebrating Water Quality Month why not celebrate it in style? One reader will receive a MAVEA Elemaris XL Pitcher of their own. To enter use the Rafflecopter widget below! Giveaway ends 12:01AM EST on 8/25/2012.
Good Luck!

We shut the water off when brushing our teeth, I only do full loads of laundry & dishes, our sprinklers in our very small yard only go on for a few minutes at 2am, we don’t water down sidewalks or driveways (brooms only)

When we have a (reusable) water bottle with “stale” water in it we dump the water on the house plants instead of down the sink.
We use economy shower heads which use less water
We have really nasty well water here and it is not drinkable. We get gallons of water to drink at the store….we take back the jugs to get refilled. I know you asked about conserving water….but we are conserving energy and waste
It would be great to win this so we wouldn’t have to keep going to the store to get water safe to drink!

I try and make sure that the kids don’t play too much with the water. Only wash full loads of laundry, turn off the water while I’m doing things. Etc.

We do not water our yard no matter how dry it gets and no water running during teeth brushing
We conserve water by having an HE washing machine with plates that uses less water with smaller loads. We have a two flush handle on our toilet. We shut-off the water while brushing our teeth and DH shuts the water off while shaving.

We use efficiency shower heads
…we conserve in many ways… I fill two sinks when I wash dishes, one to clean, one to rinse ( no dishwasher other than me…lol..) and only do dishes when their is a “load” to do.. We only wash full loads of laundry. We take the water that is “heating up” at the tap and put it on the garden and plants on the porches. Any leftover water in a bottle of water ( picked up while we are out and about, etc) goes into the dog/cat bowls and not just left to go bad in the bottle. Showers are 5 min max for everyone!! This drought is too scary, and only looks to get worse…we’ve already stopped washing cars and the lawns..
We collect rain water from our down spout into a large rubbermaid trashcan and use that water for our gardens and front lawn.
We try to conserve water in many ways. When I dump the dog’s water bowls, I pour the water on the plants and in the garden. We purchased a Kenmore HE washer and dryer that uses 15 gallons of water to wash compared to the 40 gallons my large capacity washer used. I only wash full loads of laundry. As we take a shower we get wet, turn off the water, lather up, and then rinse. I wouldn’t even begin to know how much water this saves.
When waiting for the hot water in the shower I collect it for my house plants. Also, when changing my dogs water bowls I use the water and water my outside plants.
We use rain water for all outdoor things like watering flowers & washing the car.

I conserve water by planting plants and flowers that don’t require as much upkeep so that my yard does not require watering in the summer months.
we don’t leave the water running excessively.
